Chep South Africa

Chep South Africa provides access to their forests for rural women in KZN, Southern Drakensburg to harvest wild mushrooms and sell them to Amakhowe during the rainy season from October to May. In doing so, Chep provides access to the raw material which generates daily income to the communities.

Siyakhulu’s board of trustees comprises senior members of staff of an entity called Amakhowa Investments Proprietary Limited (“Amakhowa”) in which it holds significant shareholding. Amakhowa holds an equity of 24% in Africas Best Foods Ltd which operates the business as a harvester, processor and exporter of wild produce, particularly the wild mushroom known as “Porcini” or “Boletus Edulis”, which are considered a delicacy. A third of all of Amakhowa’s profits are paid directly to Siyakhulu in the form of dividends, and these funds are utilized for the benefit of Siyakhulu’s beneficiaries, the rural previously disadvantaged women that live and work in the area surrounding Amakhowa’s factory in the town of Amsterdam in Mpumalanga.
